Shoe Village

Peter Song Sr. began his business as a street peddler selling shoes on the streets of Brooklyn. Mr. Song, who came to New York in 1976, set up his shop on steps next to a wig shop and sold bags, gloves, and shoes. When he realized that shoes were his most popular product, he began to design his own shoes, with the help of his background in architectural design. Around 2005, Mr. Song opened up a retail shop next to his warehouse in Flushing called Shoe Village.

Mr. Song’s journey was also fraught with failure as at one point the shop caught fire and all of his merchandise turned to ash. It was only through Mr. Song’s positive reputation and his “street cred” allowed him to overcome his financial difficulties and experience success once more.

Today, Peter Song Sr. operates the business with his son Peter Jr. after his son was inspired by his father. Peter Jr. attributes his family’s success to their deep connection to Flushing and its community. Watching his father earn the trust and respect of his customers inspired Peter Jr. to find ways to give back to those who helped them during their darkest times.
