If you were wealthy or famous during 1980s Seoul, you most likely got your haircut in the neighborhood of Myung Dong. This is where award-winning hair stylist Stella An, cultivated her reputation. Oftentimes she would have three assistants working under her and had her bosses at her feet. But when her husband asked her to live with him in America, her new reality began to set in. The quality of the salons here, which were usually too small or old, was not the same.

Needing employment, Stella worked in various shops on Union Street, sometimes gaining and losing customers as she drifted from one store to the next. Eventually in 1991, she was finally able to work in a salon that suited her standards, her own.

Fast forward 30 plus years, Stella now reflects back at her younger self. She laughs at the naivety and arrogance she carried with her as a young woman. Some of her friends will meet her after large gaps of time and would find themselves in shock by her complete change in character. Today, the top hairdresser in Union Street now comes with a dash of positivity, wisdom, and most undoubtedly, humility.
