Hana Pharmacy

하나약국

In 2001, Myeongha Jo one day noticed an old Russian-Jewish pharmacy sitting at the corner of the H-Mart parking lot entrance on Union Street. The neighborhood was a growing hub for Korean-American businesses and so Mr. Jo’s intuition told him that it would be the perfect location for a Korean bilingual pharmacy for the community. Despite having not a dime to his name, Mr. Jo confidently walked into the old pharmacy and inquired about purchasing it. It would cost Mr. Jo $500,000 that he didn’t have. But in his own words, “God was leading him,” and he miraculously received multiple loans to finance his pharmacy.

$100,000 came from an old trusted church member, $100,000 from the wholesaler, and $300,000 from the Russian-Jewish owners who simply had faith that Mr. Jo would succeed.

In five years, Mr. Jo’s hard work paid off. Not only was he able to pay off all his debts, but he did well enough to provide a life for his family.

Integrity is a word that comes to mind when thinking about Mr. Jo’s life. He was consistent in his promises, his dedication to the Korean community, and his diligence to his patients. Though Mr. Jo dreamt of turning his business into a franchise, instead he focuses on giving back to the people around him - his family, his community, and his patients.
